The Visitor- Part 5 (Conclusion)

“Men in Black?” I asked to see if I heard him right.
“Yup. I have to get going. Open the door”
I went to the door and opened it. There stood a man- tall, dark and handsome. Like a guy straight out of a Hollywood movie. He wore a black suit and matching goggles.
‘Who wears goggles at night?’

Paul who came behind me laughed, obviously listening to my thoughts.
“Hello sir” said the man in black, “I’m Officer Jay. I’ve come to retrieve your guest, if that’s fine with you.”
“Guest?” I looked back at Paul, “Oh yeah, sure.”
“Wassup Jay!” Paul waved his hands and the man replied in a changed amiable tone, “Hi Paul. Seems like you’re gonna be stuck here for a while longer.”
“Yeah yeah. I don’t mind.”
“You don’t mind?” the man pulled down his goggle and peered from the top to check if Paul was joking, “You mean the whole send-off party I threw for you this night was for nothin’?”
“Yeah well, thanks for the party. But guess I’m gonna be stuck here for a while longer” Paul grinned.
“Fine. But I’m not givin’ you anymore parties the next time your ship is fixed. And looks like it’s bumped up pretty good” said the man-in-black, “Kay is loading it in a truck over there.”
“I must ask, Sir” continued the man now looking at me, “Did you feel any discomfort in his presence?”
Paul was offended, “Hey look at me and then look at him. Do I look like someone who can hurt him? Evolution may have made my head bigger but left my body weak because we don’t use it much. The only discomfort to him is the tall scary guy on his doorstep in the middle of the night.”
The man smiled and pressed me, “Well, did he Sir?”
“Uh, no no not at all” I said earnestly hoping my statement would extend Paul’s stay in my house.
“Good, we’ll be off then” said the man-in-black and signalled Paul, “Get on the car Paul.”
“Hey don’t order me! And one more thing, I’m going on a vacation right after I return to office.” Paul said with his hands folded across his chest.
“Vacation? Where are you going? To the second floor of our office?”, Joked the man who called himself Jay.
“Very funny. I’m going to roam the world.”
“But we can’t let people see aliens.”
“I’m not alien. You’re alien!” Paul raised his voice.
“Okay okay, talk to Zed. Let’s see what he thinks. Now get on the car, please! We’re late and I’m sleepy.” Jay pleaded with Paul.
I didn’t know what to say to Paul. A minute ago we were talking our hearts out and now it all seemed awkward. Paul came to me and gave me a hug, his bony limbs feebly wrapping around me. He was tiny. His huge head pressing against my chest, I felt like I’m hugging one of those personal post boxes we see in Hollywood movies, or a huge lollipop.
Paul let go of me and smiled “E.T go home”.
‘Another movie reference’, incorrect reference though since the actual quote is ‘E.T phone home’ and it is often misunderstood. But I let it pass. He had just called a place on Earth his home.
Paul walked away from me and past Jay but stopped at the door, then turned towards Jay, “Jay, can you do me a favour and bypass the next step?”
“Next step?”
Paul squinted at Jay for a couple of seconds, perhaps willing him to do something, and then sighed, “It’s no use trying to convey something to you via thoughts. I meant the elimination of witness step.”
“Elimination?” I gasped.
“Are you serious? That’s a violation of protocol” Jay objected.
“Come on just this time, for me” Paul sounded pleading.
“But… You know that I’ll be in trouble.” Jay seemed conflicted.
“He won’t say anything to anyone.” Paul told him and then looked at me.
I understood nothing, “Uh what’s going on?”
“I’m just asking him to spare you.”
“Spare me?” my heart was pounding now, “You can’t kill me. That’s illegal. I didn’t commit any felony. You.. you fell in my balcony! It was your fault! I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING!”
Jay and Paul exchanged confused looks and howled with laughter together.
“See I told you… He’s harmless… Let him be, please” Paul spoke between chuckles.
“Okay fine”, said Jay “You owe me one.”
“Hey you guys want me to recommend humans to my community right? That’s why you’re helping me go back home. I owe you nothing” Paul said sticking his tongue out “Come on, let’s go”
They had just spared my life. Meeting him didn’t sound like everyone’s privilege, almost illegal. I was an outlaw in that manner. And yet, I didn’t want him to leave. I raised my hand forward to stop him from leaving and then dropped it without saying anything. Paul saw me raise my hand and thought I was waving him goodbye. He waved back.
“I’ll miss you” I blurted out. My mistake.
He stopped on his track.
“What?” jay asked him.
Paul turned towards me. His eyes even bigger now, “You’ll… miss me?”
“Yeah” I shrugged. Why are you over-reacting?
“Nobody has said that to me.” He said.
“Well, that’s maybe because people in your office see you every day. So they have nothing to miss. And the outsiders who see you are removed from existence.”
“Even when I was about to leave earth nobody said they’ll miss me” Paul eyed Jay who raised his hands in surrender, “Hey, we neva’ thought it a farewell. We assumed once you’re back to yo’ home you’d get a new ride and keep visiting us.”
Paul got to thinking and then looked at me, “How can you miss me? You just met me. Instant connection is not something humans can do. I thought only our kind felt it because of our mental connections. I even started liking your mind-voice.”
I gave a grim grin, “well, I sometimes get attached to people pretty soon too. It’s rare but it happens.”
“My gosh, you humans are better than I thought” he looked at me and Jay in turn and then at me, “Then you’ll find it hard to let go of this new friendship.”
“Sadly yes” I replied softly, “It’s not every day that I meet a super smart telepathic E.T. You’ll keep in touch right?”
“I can’t. I’ll miss you but Jay’s reputation is at stake here.”
“Oh!”
“You were right Jay” he tapped on Jay’s shoulder, “carry out the next step. I don’t want this burden on me.”
“Wait what?” I jumped back, “You mean the elimination step? You can’t do that. I’m your friend.”
Paul smiled, “Nobody’s going to hurt you buddy. Remember when I said you won’t remember anything? That’s what is going to happen. We’ll remove the evidence that I was here. Then you won’t be a witness anymore. That is the elimination.”
“Please look here Sir.” Jay adjusted his goggles in place and took out a sleek looking metal cylinder of some sort. It was rounded at both ends and had a black strip near one end. He held it vertically like an artist measuring his model with a pencil.
“Please look at this black strip” he told me.
“Wait what is this?” I asked, scared now.
“It’s Neuralyzer. It’s used to wipe the memory clean of a witness. Its flash of light goes deep in your brain and erases the most recent experiences from your short term memory before it could commit to your long term memory. You won’t remember meeting Paul.” Jay replied casually.
“What? Why?”
“I don’t want you to remember me and long to meet me buddy. I know that kind of longing- to go meet my friends -and I don’t want to be the cause of it to someone else. Hence, this cruel treatment. But it’s lesser of the two evils. I’d rather that you forget me than have you remember me as a friend who abandoned you.”
“No!” I protested. I realised that Jay’s sunglasses must be protecting him from the Neuralyzer. Why else would he be wearing a sunglass in the middle of the night? If only I had one right now. ‘And you thought you could beat Cyclops by covering yourself with sunglasses’ my mind-voice found the most inappropriate time to mock me. Paul chuckled. I looked at him and saw that he had closed his eyes and was smiling at my thoughts.
“Say cheese” said Jay and I instinctively looked at him. A blinding flash of light.
I stood stunned for a second and shook my head.
“Goodbye kid! And Thanks for the yummy Murukku.” Paul said and started walking towards his car. I was too dazed to react.
“Did you just call’im a kid?” Jay raised his eyebrows, “This guy looks like he’s in’is mid-20s.”
“Of course” I said blinking rapidly, “for someone as old as Paul everyone on earth must be like kids.”
“What the?” Jay looked at me shocked.
“He must’ve blinked” Paul called out from near the car, “and you forgot to say the commands. Try again!”
Another bright flash of light before I could protest. Everything was pure white. Like a clean white board. Like everything written on it had been just cleaned. Spotless.
As my eyes adjusted to the surroundings I heard the man-in-black talking to me, “You don’t remember anything that happened in the last hour. Nobody visited you. You just fell asleep and had strange dreams which you can’t recall. Go inside and lock the door. Go to your bed and sleep.”
“Okay” I said in a monotone. He nodded and walked away from the door. I locked the door, went to my bed room, turned off the lights, lay down on my bed and pulled up the blanket to my face. As I closed my eyes the last memory of a white board still fresh in my mind, a kind of memory that lights up the back of your eyelids.
On my table near the bed, my laptop was in ‘Sleep’ mode, with a new document open also with white screen in it. I went to ‘sleep’ mode as well.
The End
  • This story is inspired from the movies ‘Paul’ and ‘Men-in-Black’. Also my personal interest in sci-fi and philosophy. :)
  • UFOs are real. Yes, they are ‘Unidentified Flying Objects’. Whether they are weather balloon, military surveillance aircraft, a prank or actually alien spaceship is up for debate. If we knew, they won’t be called UFOs anymore would they? :P
  • Roswell Incident of 1947 refers to the crash of a military surveillance balloon in Roswell, New Mexico. When the crash was reported, the military quickly collected all the debris and concealed the military purpose of it, passing it off as a weather balloon. This caused people to believe that something was indeed fishy about the way the military covered up everything and several theories of alien spacecraft crash were born. Some witnesses of the Roswell incident claim seeing alien dead bodies being recovered by the military. Spooky isn’t it?
  • Many people who have witnessed UFOs also claim to have been visited by strange men in black suits who threatened them into keeping silence about their UFO sighting. If we can believe someone’s account of an alien space ship hovering above them then we might as well believe in the MIB phenomena.
  • Apart from these there are several account of people who claim to have seen live aliens and some believe they were abducted by the aliens to their ships where they were experimented on and then were returned back to earth, all this while they either have lost track of a lot of actual time or no time at all.
  • Even with all the so called video ‘proof’ and crop circles, there is no substantial irrefutable proof of life elsewhere in the universe. I believe, and so do many others, that this is because of the close minded short sightedness of religion and scientific limitation in venturing deeper into space. We cannot even claim to know all the species right here on earth, and the universe is infinitely vast. We must be really conceited to believe that we’re the only ones.
-Post Credit Scene-
I got up after about an hour of sleep because of the faint burning sensation in my eyes. I switched on the light and looked at the sleep deprived self in the mirror. My eyes were red and eyelids were drooping. There was a thin filament coming out of the corner of my right eye.
“Oh crap!” I reached to it and pulled it out. It came out without resistance. I dropped it in an open cup on the drawer below the mirror. I carefully took out the other one from my right eye.
The vendor who supplied these contact lenses, though proudly advertised its AR coating and the UV protection capabilities, had strongly advised me against sleeping with the lens on. “These babies may protect your eyes from harmful rays but the eyes also need oxygen which is hard to get with the eyelids closed.” He had said.
I dropped the second lens in the disinfectant liquid to soak all night. I drew heavy breath and went back to my bed. I had to pretend like I had forgotten everything in front of Jay. I then looked at my laptop.
You wanted inspiration for a blog post. Now you have enough for atleast five.’Whispered my mind-voice.
The End (for real this time)–

The Visitor- Part 4

“What? You were living on earth for decades?”
“I was trying to fly back to my place when my shuttle froze and I had to land it here.”
“Where were you living all these days? and why? And How?” It made no sense to me so I kept on adding question marks, “and What?”
Paul heaved a sigh, “I shouldn’t probably tell you this, but what the hell, you won’t remember it anyway and I liked talking to you.” He said it so quick I didn’t quite catch its essence.
“Wait what?”
“The thing is kid, I crashed on earth in 1947 in a place called Roswell in Mexico. Some of my friends and I left our planet on a drunk adventure and we crashed on this god forsaken planet. My friends died on impact and I was taken captive. They experimented on me like I’m some frog ready for dissection. They opened my up, poked around my insides and stitched me up finally because they needed me alive.” He touched the outlines of a long but faint scar on his chest, “Then they put me in a cell to keep me from running away or contacting my planet. They kept calling and referring me as ‘Alien’, reaffirming my feeling of being alienated. The trauma of that is why I don’t like being called ‘Alien’. Even when they spoke to me- and I’d learnt the language in a couple of days just by observing them- they spoke cautiously. They were afraid that I’ll call for my people’s help. But the truth is my ship was broken and there’s no space-time bender on earth that can call my home planet. The fastest signal you use is still limited by light speed and that’ll take millions of years to reach my planet.”
“Wow. But 1947? Gosh that’s long. You don’t look much old.”
“Like I said, I really am still young. Life span is very important for technical growth.”
“Right you said that before. So you’re saying you came to earth on 1947? And they kept you captive? So you broke free and were trying to escape today? But your shuttle crashed again behind my house”
“Umm..” He smiled at my imagination “Not so much buddy. They did keep me captive for a few years. Then the commander in-charge of Extra-terrestrial affairs was replaced and he was kinder to me. He saw what I’m capable of and he knew I’ll be of help to them if only they were more polite to me. So he set me free but requested not to roam outside the facility.”
“They have an office for extra-terrestrial affairs?”
“Yes, much like foreign embassies in each country. That’s the place where other extra-terrestrials come to visit Earth”
“Wait a second? You’re saying there are other aliens… I mean E.Ts on earth right now?”
“Yup”
“So the Area 51 is real?”
“Nah” He snorted, “That’s just a military bunker that was made to distract conspiracy theorists from finding the real deal. The real E.T embassy is underground in a place I can’t tell you.”
“Wow, so it’s true. There are outsiders among us”
“You sound surprised.”
“Of course I am. These aren’t things we see on news, but only in sci-fi movies.”
“Yeah well, they don’t want people to know about it. There’s no telling how people will react to out of the world creatures. I’m guessing the reaction of most will be just like the reaction of those who found me. They’re like children and they’d want to poke us to see what happens. Humans look suspiciously even at a foreigner. The bigger issue is that our mere presence will immediately invalidate a couple of big religions in this world. That is enough to cause a world-wide havoc. So the commander who helped me also begged me not to run away. He was the one who drastically changed the department for Extra-Terrestrial affairs and made it friendly for guests. They have ties with several species from this galaxy. Now I’m given a celebrity treatment in the facility and I’ve helped them as much as I can.”
“So if the whole department was founded on your arrival why can’t they help you rebuild your shuttle?”
“They’re trying. They’ve even joined hands with some other E.Ts in repairing my shuttle, but there’s not much they know about so it’s like running a Ferrari on batteries; There’s not enough power. And none of the other E.Ts is advanced enough to contact my place. I couldn’t help either because no matter how smart I am I’m still a young amateur when compared to those that made this shuttle.”
“But it flew today?”
“Yeah, they thought they’ve figured it out. I was still anxious but I gave it a try anyway. I was supposed to go round the earth on my shuttle and let the gravity fling me to the outer space like a sling shot. It’s funny you people still use that technique. But as I was halfway through the globe my shuttle broke down and I had to land it as quietly as possible. But you saw it because you were awake at 1 am.”
“Sorry” I gave a sheepish grin, “But hey, a great mind like yours should know to test the thing before you venture into space with it. Even our company has a huge department of testers that scrutinize everything before they let it go out for use.”
“Yeah well I was in a hurry to go home.”
“In such hurry that you’d risk your life?”
“You don’t know how it feels like kid, the longing, the loneliness.”
“Loneliness? You’re a rockstar in your department. You just said it. Why not take advantage of it?”
“Yeah, all the celebrity treatment asides I have to spend my days and nights in my room, watching movies and TV series on the internet.” It seemed like he was feeling comfortable with me to share his feelings. But then I recalled him saying something about me going to forget it all.
“That’s the problem.” I said trying to push aside the uncomfortable feeling in my guts. Even though I felt sympathy for him I also had this uneasy premonition that something was about to happen. I continued, “You should go out and have fun. I’m sure the other E.Ts will lend you their cloaking device or whatever it is to make you look like a human.”
“I don’t want to. All these years, getting back has been my only goal.”
“I understand it must be really frustrating. But earth isn’t a bad place either. Instead of hastening and taking deadly risks to get back, you can just sit back and enjoy the scenery for a while. I’m sure they’ll figure out your shuttle’s tech in another couple of decades if not today, and you’ll still be young then. So enjoy the stay.”
“That’s what I’ve been doing all this while.”
“But you haven’t seen the real earth yet. Watching a mountain through the window of your house is nothing compared to experiencing it from atop the mountain. And you’ve been watching the world from your computer, your ‘Windows’. I’ll tell you something I haven’t told anyone.
‘Last year I was very depressed. I don’t know if it was the heartbreak or the night shifts in office that messed me up but I didn’t want to live anymore. I didn’t want to die either but nothing felt interesting anymore. I was just moving forward in line, working, earning and surviving. Nothing excited me. I just wanted to get away from everything, get out of this world of misery. Then I heard that they were planning to send people to Mars on a one way trip. The people will live there on Mars and establish their colony. I almost jumped to the opportunity because it was exactly what I needed- to get out of this world.
‘I had made up my mind and planned to apply for it over that weekend. But then something happened. When I travelled in bus back and forth to office I started appreciating the scenery. I found the trees extra green and the roads extra dark. I found that the sky isn’t just plain blue, but it has several shades and sometimes of different colors. I started finding even a dog besides a dumpster amusing. I started finding the bus conductors friendly and the girls beautiful again. Even when I got to office I enjoyed talking to people around me because those were supposed to be the last few days of my life on earth. So I was nice to people since I didn’t want to leave them having any grudges against me, and they were in turn extra nice. Then I thought- this is good. Life is good. I realized that I’m enjoying these plain views while there’s so much more to see in the world. I have gone to several places in India but never outside India. How could I leave a world and a life that I haven’t experienced to the fullest? I didn’t apply for the one way trip after that.”
Paul stared at me expressionless. I may have not put it in very good words but I knew that he could feel my feelings. He was telepathic after all, which is nothing but empathy from a distance. Maybe that’s why they were so much better than us, because they could understand each other’s feelings. When you know what others feel there’s no way to act selfish. But just to put my thoughts to words about the greatness of planet earth, I went on, “There’s nothing better than a song when it comes to express something deep. Here’s a song I love.”
I began to clear my throat when my mind-voice interrupted me, “Dude, please don’t tell me you’re going to sing. We don’t want to scare our guest now, do we?”
“Ahem, right. Let me play the song from my mobile instead. I forgot the lines” I said and Paul looked at me amused. I searched for the song and played it. After some indiscernible African chants the song began in English-
“From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There’s more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
There’s far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high
Through the sapphire sky
Keeps the great and small on the endless round.
It’s the Circle of Life…” and it went on.
“Wow” he was impressed I could see, “So if you had applied you think you could’ve been chosen to go to Mars?”
“Nah, the chances were slim”, I chuckled, “But there’s something about the thought of leaving something that makes it look dear to us.”
“Barney Stinson calls it ‘Graduation Goggles’. Like how we start liking our school in the final days even though we hated it while in school.” Paul said smiling.
“Oh yeah, I was just going to say that. You stole my thoughts”
“Hey I wasn’t looking into your mind, promise.” He laughed and I saw some colour on his grey skin maybe the life coming back to him, “Thank you kid. You made me appreciate what I have now. Of course I want to go back to my place, but I won’t be in a hurry after this. I don’t want to.. you know.. die” he laughed again.
He’s quoting Russell Peters now’ my mind-voice whispered.
“I heard that” he said.
“Sorry” I chuckled, “It’s not me. It’s my mind-voice.”
He suddenly went silent, “You hear that?”
“Of course. It’s my mind-voice.” I raised my left brow.
“Not you. That sound outside”
I listened carefully for a few seconds and heard nothing. “No” I said and as if to mock my timing the doorbell rang.
“They’re here” Paul said.
‘Another movie reference’ said the mind-voice but I was scared and asked Paul who it was at this time.
“They’ve come to take me back. They must’ve figured that the shuttle didn’t work and they tracked it down here.”
“Who? The department of E.T?”
Paul nodded, “Their agents. The Men-in-Black.”

The Visitor- Part 3

“Mind-voice?” I asked again.

“More like telepathy. When I mentioned my planet’s name did you feel any slight throbbing in your head?”

You bet it did!’ my mind-voice was listening intently now and I replied to Paul, “Yeah it did hurt a bit but I thought that was the uncomfortable frequency of your voice”

“That’s because I said the name in our language which includes transmission of mental ideas along with the usual air vibrations. Humans can’t process incoming telepathic signals efficiently yet. But we can receive your mental signals very well”

Oops. Time to go mute’ my mind-voice declared and Paul smirked, “Going mute won’t help kid.
You see, thoughts are not necessarily just the words and sentences in your mind. Mental images, ideas, anger, love. You humans send it out continuously. There’s no easy way for you to truly mute that. Just like you can’t consciously listen to others thoughts, you can’t consciously stop sending out your thoughts either.”

“Oh! I should stop thinking then?”

“Hmm, but having an open heart is not a bad thing. Sending your thoughts out for someone is a very compassionate way of touching someone’s soul. There must have been days when you suddenly felt loved and days when you felt all alone? That’s your body tuning in to the thoughts around you. This is why you feel comfortable at home with family even if nobody’s talking. One person’s state of mind can impact others around him. You humans are still in baby phase, kid.”

“Hey I’m not a kid” I inflated like a hot balloon.

“Don’t get angry at me for saying the cold hard fact, kid. Your species is really in a kiddie phase. And if there’s anything against you humans, it’s the time.”

“What time?”

“Your average life span. Do you think humans could’ve achieved anything if their life span was about that of a cat? Like 20 years at max? Almost all great achievements were done by people above that only. Imagine what Einstein could’ve done if he had lived just a few more decades. You get smarter as you age and then you die, with all those ideas that were never expanded or implemented. When your medical growth prevented several diseases from being fatal and the average life expectancy was increased you saw tremendous growth in science. There’s no wonder humans have achieved so much in the last two centuries, far more than they had achieved in the previous two millenniums. It’s really impressive. But our kind live long, several centuries. I’m about 90 of earth years old but back home I’m still considered an adolescent, a mad youth who gets kick out of driving to the far corners of galaxy.”

I sensed him getting personal now and something seemed to hurt him, so I tried to move on from the topic “What else do we need to be as smart as you? What makes you so smart?”

“Brain to body ratio, dude. Brain to body ratio.” He said waving his hands up and down his skeletal frame, seemingly happy at boasting about his superiority.

“What does that mean?”

“Look at other animals. Their brains are used for mostly controlling their body and preserving it, running around, hunting, surviving. But human brains are bigger when compared to their body weight. Big enough to control your body and still have space for other stuffs like thinking. And since you people stopped leading a hunter’s life and settled down farming, your lives became much simpler and were able to do things like sitting and pondering under an apple tree. Suddenly humans had all the time in the world to use that brain for tasks other than thinking about food and reproduction.”

I blushed, “We still do that… a lot”

Paul laughed. “I know. We do too”, he winked “But our brains are big enough to think about other important tasks at hand too. Remember that scene from ‘Watchmen’ where Dr. Manhattan is making love to his girlfriend and he conjures up a body double to carry out scientific experiments in the next room?”

I giggled like a girl, “Oh yeah! She storms out of the room when she finds out, as if she has caught him cheating on her”

“Science being the second girlfriend” he chimed in. I was starting to like this alien, I mean extra-terrestrial visitor.

“Well, the point is that we have much bigger brains and tiny body.” He said coming back to the topic.

“But we will too. Humans didn't always have big brains. We evolved.”

“Yes, you will. If time permits that is.”

“What does that mean?”

“If you don’t destroy each other before then. Your economic system is designed such that everyone has to do something- a job, no matter how boring- to feed yourself. A system where eveyone’s in debt, debt to his stomach, his family, his employer and you try to pay that off by working and earning wages. A system where the one with a lot of bank balance gets interest and the one below minimum balance is fined, perpetuating the “rich get richer and poor get poorer” setting. A system where someone with money has to do very little to earn more but someone with not enough money has to toil to get nearly enough before running out of money again. A system where people are slaves to the paper-bonds.”

“That’s true, but I don’t see how we could do it any differently.”

“You can if you put aside your differences.”

“How can that be done?”

“See, in our world we act like one huge family. There’s no currency and so nobody’s pressured to earn. Everyone’s allowed to do what they love and contribute to society in their own way. If someone is interested in making spaceships he will join others of similar interest and they will request raw materials from someone who is fond of making metals, promising him some of the working ships. He will give gladly since it’s only for the betterment of the community. Someone whose love is in cooking will spend all day cooking to his heart’s content and distribute it among the neighbours, supplying food in essence. Someone whose dream is teaching will teach the colony’s children and so on.”

“But in such an impartial system won’t there be lazy bones like me who’ll waste time doing nothing.” I said.

“There could be, and there are kids like you too, but seeing everyone around them contribute something to the society they feel guilty and start doing something. Have you seen an ant in an ant colony lazing around? It’s in their nature to act as one big family. That colony won’t survive if every ant saved food only for itself. Much like individual families here on earth. Your dad won’t scold you if you spent a couple days in home being sick. They’ll take care of you. Ants do that too and so do we in our planet.

‘But humans don’t care about anything that is outside his field of vision. You make walls for the house, dividing yourself from the ‘outside’, make borders between countries, states, towns and then fight for your own states. And then you divide yourselves based on dumb concepts like religion, language, caste, race etcetera etcetera. Of course, it is only practical in this system where ‘profit’ is the only goal. It requires a drastic change in views of everyone at once to make any progress.”

“So you think we have no hope?”

“You have potential. That is, like I said, if you don’t destroy yourselves into nothingness first. Like a bright sun collapsing into a black hole.”

I stared at him mouth gaping with awe (or was that the sound I made? ‘Ah’), “How do you know so much about Earth when you just fell here on my balcony?”

“Of course I know so much. I've been studying you people.”

“Ah, there you go” I laughed, “So your kind is actually interested in our progress. You said they are not impressed by our technology.”

“Yes they’re not. But I don’t have a choice. You think I fell in your balcony from outer space?”

“What else?”

“I've been living on earth for several decades now.”

The Visitor- Part 2

I stared blankly back at it. The sound seemed to be coming from the creature, but in a very human-like voice. I managed to sit straight.

Sensing that I was too shocked to reply, it spoke again “I heard you from outside. Why on earth were you talking to yourself?”

“Uhh…” I just sat there motionless frozen to sub-zero.

“Because you cannot go to Mars and then talk to yourself, that’s why” it said and fell on my bed laughing.

I looked in disbelief at the thing rolling on my bed. Was that a genuine laughter? It sounded so. It got up and looked at me. Maybe I should call it a ‘him’ seeing that he introduced himself as Paul and sounded like a male.

“Get it? ‘Why on earth’… ‘Mars’…  I’m taking a jibe at your astronautic capabilities. Get it? Oh come on!” he genuinely looked disappointed, and looked at me apprehensively.

“Oh! I forgot” something seemed to have occurred to him, “I’m in India. Do… you… speak… Engliiiishh?” he said slowly.

“Uhh?” even my mind-voice was awestruck.

“How do I make a connection with you if you don’t understand me” he said it more to himself than to me, “Oh wai-wai-wait I know an Indian song. I hope that’ll ease you up”

As I prayed against any “yo-yo Honey Sing” he started singing “Why this kolaavery kolaavery kolaavery dee”

“Oh please kill me already” my mind-voice shut its ears.

“See? I’m friendly. Don’t be afraid.” he, the thing, said to me now stopping the song.

“What are you?” I managed to speak at last. He stared at me as if offended.

“I mean, who are you?” I corrected myself.

“So you do speak English. Man, you made me show off my singing skills” He said.
‘Really?? Singing skills?’ I shushed my mind-voice trying to think straight, “You didn’t answer me”

“Boy, you’re demanding.” He snickered “Okay take a guess. Look at me and tell me you haven’t seen me before.”

“No I haven’t. I don’t know who you are” I lied. I had indeed seen something like ‘him’ before. But only in the movies.

“Oh, I’m sure you know” he wasn’t giving up.

“You’re an alien” I guessed. That must be it. The other guesses in my list were Yeti, Chupacabra and Loc Ness monster but I didn’t think those would be smart guesses.

“No YOU’RE an alien” he hissed, his smile fading for a few second and then he recovered, “I’m sorry. Don’t say the A-word. I find it disturbing.”

“But you are an alien right? You’re not from this world” I asked.

“And you’re an alien to me. How does that feel huh?” he spat back. Honestly I didn’t feel as offended as he did, but then people have their preferences of offensive words.

“Okay okay sorry. No A-word” I apologized feeling a little confident now and I got up from the floor. He was hardly up to my shoulder height. But there was still something daunting about him, perhaps the balloon head.

He looked up to meet my eyes, “That’s good” and then he sat on my bed, “I’m hungry. Do you have something to eat?”

“You still haven’t told me what you are” I pressed. He raised the skin above one of his big eyes where people usually have eyebrows and I corrected myself “… who you are”

“Well I’m an inhabitant of &^%#$%*@”

“Um… what?” I felt lost because he had just made some strange noise, a throaty gargle mixed with a nasal sound and just hearing it made my head heavy.

“Never mind. I don’t know how to say it in English. It’s how we call our planet. It’s in a galaxy far far away.”

“Did you just quote Star Wars?”

“Yep” he grinned. I wanted to ask how he could’ve seen the movie but I let it pass.

“So you are really an ali-” I was going to say it again and then corrected it, “You’re an A-word”
He laughed loudly, a hearty laugh, “You make it sound like a curse word. Yeah, I’m an Extra-terrestrial… to your planet.”

“E.T?”

“Yep”

“And calling you an E.T is fine?”

“Yeah it’s fine” he said shortly and didn’t explain further, “So can I get something to eat?”

I passed him the plate of Murukku that I had brought back from my vacation to home. He chewed on it with surprising efficiency “Mmm, crunchy. As much as I feel sorry about your species I enjoy your food. That’s the one thing you’ve done good. Food in my planet is bland. We don’t have spices you see.”

“Sooo…” I thought of a reply to give “take some spice from here with you”

What? Ask him how he knows so much about us’, my mind-voice was back, now that there was no danger.

The E.T that called himself Paul chuckled “I wish!”, but didn’t explain further and munched on some more Murukku.

“Sooo…” I pondered over what to ask him, “What are you doing here?”

“Nothing. Just traveling.” He said looking at the snacks and not me, but again didn’t explain further.

“You can travel planet to planet, I mean… galaxy to galaxy just like that?”

“Yeah, pretty much” still not looking at me but the snacks and then his big fluorescent eyes turned towards me, “Oh I’m sorry. Where are my manners? You see, I didn’t simply land here because I wanted to. My shuttle broke down. So I had to park it outside your house.”

‘Oh that’s what the bright light outside the window was’, my mind-voice put two and two together.

“So you crash landed on earth? You found lights on in my room so thought you’d come say Hi” I tried to make it sound formal all the while my mind-voice was shouting ‘Cliché! What a Cliché’

“Well, there was a lot of stuff that happened in between but that’s a fair statement which explains how I got to be sitting here” he said having almost finished eating the snacks.

I nodded and tried to make more conversation before he got bored and left my house, “So… Paul. If you guys have been out there for so long, I mean your species as a whole, why haven’t we heard from you before? You know there are satellites listening to radio frequencies from outer space.”

Paul seemed hesitant at first and then spoke, “Well kid, I belong to a highly intelligent species. There are only a handful of such elite species in the universe. Our people didn’t see it worthwhile to contact you humans.”

“What do you mean?” I said it a little too loudly than my usual self.

“I’m sorry if that offends you, but that’s the truth. We usually keep it to ourselves. Like the secret societies in your world. We are like a gang of Ph.D graduates.”

“So you don’t hang with us kindergarten folks.”

“Umm, more like primates.”

“Okay” I didn’t like that I was agreeing to him, “What makes you think you are so smart?”

He kept his cool, “I travelled several galaxies to get here in less time than light takes to travel from Sun to Mars.”

“Oh” was all I could manage.

“The deepest into space you’ve gone is to your own moon and the farthest you’ve sent anything is the Voyager, that that has gone just a little a bit farther than Pluto.”

“And it’s still going.”

“Yeah yeah, Very impressive. You know where I’m getting at. How are you supposed to go ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ with such speed?”

“Point taken” I couldn’t argue with that, and my mind-voice said ‘He’s quoting Buzz Lightyear now’.

“That’s why I said I don’t want to offend you. It’s a decision taken by powerful people that Earth is not yet ready for our contact.”

“We can be taught”

“There are limitations. Even if we dumb it down from our end, the technologies are way out of your understanding. You see, your communication skills are not yet developed to match ours. Just like maths has to be taught in numbers and not English, our technology needs a very high level language.”

“Like Java?”

He chuckled, “Something like that”

“We can learn that language”

“You can teach sign language to a Gorilla or Orang-utan but will you go about teaching sign language to a cat? Java is a high level language for computers. But it’s made on top of low level languages which are made on top of binary language. In the end the bits and bytes are what make the difference, but they are nothing on their own. You need to arrange them as per the rules of a language. Can you write a Java program in Zeroes and Ones straight from memory? It’d need a powerful mind to do that right? That’s how our language is. Language makes difference”

“So you’re saying that language has the power to make people smart?”

“Yeah, your languages are stupid. Just 26 letters and a handful of grammatical rules that people are too cool to follow. But Chinese, now that’s a language. Took me almost a month to learn”

“A month?”

“Yeah, can you believe it? So long for one language.”

I was going to say that that was not what I meant but he continued, “An average Chinese or Japanese is smarter than an average person elsewhere. That’s because their minds are moulded to process more information per symbol than other languages do.”

“So why can’t we process your language? You can teach it to those smart Chinese or Japanese people.”

“There’re still limitations” he grinned, “We use more than just sounds to get our thoughts across, and that’s not something you can do yet.”

“Like what?”

“Just like how you use vocal sounds along with your body language to get a point across effectively, we use vocal, nasal and mind-voice.”

“Mind-voice?” I was shocked to hear the name I had been using all this while to refer to my inner thoughts.
